Gwenda’s Garage
Stage Manager on book
Sep – Nov 25 | Sheffield & Southwark | Out of the Archive
Gwenda’s Garage toured to Sheffield and Southwark in a workshop-style setting, with a high-traffic stage and performer-moved scenic elements throughout. The nature of the set and the limited space required careful coordination and a strong focus on safety from the outset.
I joined the production as Stage Manager on the book and was promoted to Company Stage Manager mid-run, taking on wider responsibility for the day-to-day running of the company. In this role, I provided calm, decisive leadership and proactive oversight, addressing cast tensions openly and fairly to help establish a cohesive and professional working environment.
Alongside company management, I led health and safety planning for a busy, complex stage. Working closely with the team, I introduced clear procedures and practical risk mitigations to support safe movement and scene changes within the confined space. This approach ensured the production ran smoothly throughout the run, with no near misses.
I particularly valued the level of trust and responsibility this role involved. Being promoted mid-run was a meaningful vote of confidence, and the experience reinforced the importance of clear communication, fairness, and steady leadership in creating a safe and supportive working environment.
