The Pirates of Penzance
Deputy Stage Manager
Dec 24 – Feb 25 | UK Tour | Cahoots Theatre
The Pirates of Penzance is a classic operetta by Gilbert and Sullivan, performed for a wide touring audience with a blend of comic storytelling and operatic musicality.
I called the production cleanly and accurately to a fully orchestrated operatic score, working closely with the conductor and a 27-piece orchestra. The cast, largely drawn from Glyndebourne and Scottish Opera, presented exceptionally high musical standards. Strong sight-reading skills and precise musical judgment were essential to cue each performance seamlessly, ensuring the 25-strong cast and orchestra could perform consistently at every venue.
When the production transferred from a thrust stage to a proscenium layout on tour, I proactively supported the creative team by identifying necessary staging adjustments and anticipating potential backstage and acoustic issues. This included implementing wing monitors and other technical solutions, ensuring a smooth transition and maintaining the integrity of the production.
Throughout the tour, I collaborated closely with the directors, production staff, and performers to provide full backstage support, demonstrating adaptability, problem-solving, and clear communication. My role required balancing musical precision, stage management logistics, and proactive planning to guarantee every performance ran to the highest standard.
